History
King Abdallah II announced on January 16th, 2008 his will to create a Jordanian Gendarmerie just like its French elder sister, creation confirmed and recorded by the promulgation of the July 10th, 2008 law N° 34/2008.
The forces dedicated to the public order and to the counter-terrorism were removed from the PSD (Public Security Department) and placed under an independent command.
The increase in power of this institution was accompanied by France (Establishment from 2009 of an adviser attached to the Director) and the European Union through a 19 months twinning (France, Romania, Spain and Lithuania).
Organization
Created in 2008 as Police security force independent, the Jordanian gendarmerie is organized into the following structures:

Central organization
A Directorate General connected with the Ministry of Interior and composed of a General Inspectorate, the legal affairs, the Intelligence Service department and the department of the finances.
Territorial organization
Three organic regions (North, Centre and South) with a distribution of 4 battalions by region.

Specialized Training
• The Initial Training School in Kafrein and the Training Centre in Swaqa.
• The diplomatic gendarmerie to 4 battalions;
• The "Special Police Brigade", an intervention unit inspired by the GIGN
• The "Special Tasks" Brigade (Reserve troop for 4 battalions).
Missions

• Public order;
• Counter-terrorism;
• Port facilities security;
• Capital "Tender Spots" Security.
Staff
Approximately 22 000 men and women with military status for an eventually expected format of 30 000.
The women are represented since 2008.
The staff lives in barracks.
The non-commissioned officers are recruited at the level of "A levels"/"Highers" after a competition and an interview. The Training, with a duration of 18 months, is including a sixth months initial training in Kafrein school, then the 12 months additional formation in Swaga instruction centre.
Main equipment
• Armament: American type of Individual armament (M16).
• Vehicle: URUTU Armoured URUTU (Brazilian origin) and Saxon ( English origin) - Tactical vehicle « JAWAD « (horse in Arabic language) - Group Tactical small van, armoured or not - Van with pump.
Cooperation
At the international level: FIEP(Franc Italy Spain Portugal) member since October, 2011.
At the regional level: Numerous cooperation actions with Palestine, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Creation in Swaqa of a training centre at regional vocation.
Strong participation within the United Nations Peacekeeping missions (approximately 1 300 servicemen per year).
